Every so often someone asks me what exactly it is I make over at Mystery, She Sewed, and I always want to answer with a question of my own: what if your next embroidery project had a plot?
That is a mystery stitch along. It is a machine embroidery project where the design arrives in pieces, wrapped in a story. Each week you get a new chapter, a new clue, and a new design to stitch. By the final week you have a finished set of embroidered evidence and, if you have been paying attention, a very strong opinion about whodunit.
What a mystery stitch along actually is
In a normal stitch along, everyone works on the same design over a few weeks and you can usually see the finished project before you start. In a mystery stitch along, the finish is the secret. You open a case without knowing where the story goes, and the designs reveal themselves one clue at a time.
Mine run for four weeks. Each instalment lands in your inbox with a piece of the story and an original embroidery design that doubles as a clue. You stitch, you theorise, and at the end you file your verdict and find out whether you cracked it. It is part embroidery project, part detective novel, and slightly more addictive than either on its own.
How it works, week by week
- Open a case. Pick a mystery from the Case Board. Your case file opens straight away, no waiting for a start date.
- Your first clue arrives by email. The story begins, and with it your first design files.
- A new clue lands each week for four weeks. Each one brings the next chapter and the next design. All you need to do is stitch and keep your suspicions organised.
- File your verdict. After the final clue you name your culprit through a form in your email. Get it right and there is a reward waiting for your next case.
- The reveal. A week later the truth comes out, along with a bonus solver’s patch design for everyone who worked the case.
What you need
Not much, which is rather the point:
- Any embroidery machine with a 4 x 4 inch (100mm) hoop. Every design in every case fits it.
- Design files come in PES, DST, EXP, XXX and JEF. If your machine speaks another language, ask me and I will sort it.
- Fabric, stabiliser and thread you probably already have. There is no kit to buy and no special supplies list.
There are also no deadlines. The clues arrive weekly, but they will wait patiently in your inbox if life gets in the way. Some of my detectives stitch the whole case in one weekend and some take a month per clue. The mystery does not mind.
Do you need to be an experienced embroiderer?
No. If you can hoop your fabric and press start, you can work a case. The designs are chosen so a first-time stitcher can finish them, and if anything goes sideways in your hoop, you can reply to any clue email and a real person (me) will help you sort it. Embroidery can be daunting when you first start out, but you definitely do not need to do it alone.

How is it different from a mystery quilt along?
Quilters have been keeping secrets for years with mystery quilt alongs, where you cut and piece blocks for months without knowing the final layout. A mystery embroidery stitch along borrows the same delicious secrecy but swaps the medium: machine embroidery designs instead of quilt blocks, four weeks instead of many months, and an actual whodunit story driving the whole thing. You are not just waiting to see the design. You are solving something.
The cases open right now
Mystery, She Sewed is two cases in, and both are open to join at any time:

Questions I get asked
Do I have to keep up week by week? No. The clues arrive weekly but nothing expires. Join in July, stitch in September, solve at your own pace.
What happens if I guess wrong? Nothing terrible. You can study the clues again and file another verdict. Some of the best detectives get it wrong the first time.
Can I stitch it if I am outside New Zealand? Yes. Everything is delivered digitally, so detectives anywhere in the world can work a case, and prices show in your local currency.
Can I sell what I stitch? Finished stitched items can be sold in small handmade quantities (with a spoiler warning, please). The design files themselves stay with you and are never to be shared or sold.
